The Link We Cannot See

Aug 2, 2026 | awareness, faith, growing | 4 comments

We often think of life as a journey with a clear beginning and an equally clear destination. We celebrate births, mourn deaths, and imagine that everything meaningful happens in the years between. But perhaps that is only the visible part of the story.

Long before we arrived, countless lives shaped the world we inherited. Parents and grandparents, teachers and strangers, people whose names we will never know, each left behind something that quietly became part of us. Their kindness, courage, mistakes, sacrifices and wisdom travelled further than they ever could have imagined. And one day, we too will become invisible. That thought need not fill us with sadness. It can fill us with purpose.

We are not here to complete the chain. We are here to strengthen the link entrusted to us. This changes the way we measure our life. Success is no longer about how much recognition we receive or how long our name is remembered. It is about what passes through us. Did we leave people a little more hopeful than we found them? Did we pass on patience instead of anger, wisdom instead of bitterness, courage instead of fear? Most importantly, did we love enough?

Most of the impact of our lives will remain hidden from us. A conversation may influence a decision years later. An act of generosity may echo through generations. We may never know where the ripples end. And perhaps we were never meant to.

There is a quiet freedom in accepting that we are only one link in a chain that neither begins nor ends with us. Our responsibility is not to see the whole design. It is simply to ensure that what reaches us leaves our hands a little better than it arrived.

When our time comes to become invisible once again, the only thing that matters is asking ourselves the basic question: when the chain passed through our hands, did we make it stronger? That’s all that matters.

  1. Good morning Vivek
    As usual profound thoughts.
Strength of the chain is determined by its weakest link . We should not be that weak link and make the weakest link stronger to the best of our ability. That’s the purpose of life.🙏
