Freedom is one of the greatest gifts we have. We have the freedom to think, to speak, to act and, most importantly, to choose. But there is one freedom we do not have—how life responds to us.
Life operates on a simple principle: cause and effect. Every action creates a reaction. Every choice sets something into motion. Sometimes the consequence is immediate; sometimes it takes years to arrive. But just because we cannot see it does not mean it has disappeared.
We often imagine that once an action is behind us, it is gone. It isn’t. The impact of what we do travels with us. A kind word may return as goodwill years later. A careless decision may return as a lesson we never expected. What we put into the world has a way of finding its way back to us.
This is why freedom is both powerful and dangerous. The freedom to choose gives us enormous power, but that power comes with responsibility. Freedom without awareness can become recklessness. The more freedom we have, the more conscious we need to be about how we use it.
But even when we make the right choices, life will not always unfold the way we expect. Sometimes the wait is longer than expected, and results come in a very different form than what we had expected. We can choose our actions, we cannot control or insist how the result will look. What we can control, however, is the person we become in preparation for it.
When we build ourselves with equanimity, optimism and resilience, even when life brings us the expected or the unexpected, the pleasant or the painful, we are not broken by it. We build on it, learn from it and grow from it.
Life is all about the choices we make. Choose carefully, for while we may be free to choose the seeds we sow, we are never free to choose the harvest.
