Being truly Independent

Gaining Independence is a struggle. There’s always a more powerful force wanting to control us and we need to fight to break free. And it’s a fight worth engaging in.

Nations need to fight an external power. Individuals embark on an internal freedom struggle. To win over our ego.

We need to gain independence not only ‘for’ ourselves but ‘from’ ourselves as well. Our sense of ego, pride and arrogance carries us away in our success. Our fears, attachments, anger and anxiety pull us down. Being Equanimous is being independent.

And when we live with the feeling that “I” have achieved financial independence and “I” can manage alone, it’s a sign of our ego. Of course it’s good to be secure, but with gratitude, not pride. Because many along the way have helped us reach where we are. Acknowledging those who have helped us and showing gratitude is being independent.

Being independent doesn’t mean we don’t need anyone. It means we’re so centred and secure within, we are available to everyone. And we build strong bonds and relationships of giving. Living with an attitude of service is being independent.

Our sense of self-worth doesn’t come from the opinion of others but from our own integrity. Being honest with ourselves is being independent. And when we are able to share our thoughts and speak fearlessly, we live with courage and equality. Fearlessness is independence.

But our true test of being independent is being peaceful, whether in the midst of the bustling world or in our own solitude. Because we find our completeness within. And in that  completeness we recognise that even as the world is changing, there’s a changeless in us. Just as the movies may change, but the screen remains unchanged whether it’s a comedy or a tragedy. The screen is independent.

And with faith, devotion and knowledge when we conquer our ego and submit ourselves to discover the Higher within, we understand life’s basic principle. Surrender is true Independence.
