Indian weddings often start with a prayer to Lord Ganesha, and on one such occasion, the priest explained the significance. The five attributes he shared not only made for very interesting hearing, they also serve as a reminder and guide for us.

His large forehead reminds us to be broad-minded. Often we become victims of our own limitations, unwilling to explore and accept perspectives, people, and plans we are not comfortable with. When we broaden our thinking, becoming more inclusive and accepting, we experience a new dimension of life and ourselves that enriches us.

Ganesha’s big ears remind us to listen more. Listening deeply needs us to not only give our full attention, but it also requires us to reflect on what was said, and also what was important but remained unsaid. Truly listening opens up hearts.

His large stomach tells us that much will happen in our lives, and we need to have the ability to digest it all. If we start getting upset at the smallest thing, what real quality of life are we giving ourselves? Equanimity becomes our hallmark as we develop our capacity to accept the ups and downs of life.

He may have a large stomach but small feet. They are a reminder for us to tread carefully, thoughtfully, and never in haste. Life is not a race to be won, but a journey to be experienced. And a reminder that small steps daily in our inner growth will help us not only live at a higher level of consciousness, but also discover our true Self.

Finally, his long trunk reminds us to maintain our self-respect and dignity as we deal with the world.

The Ganpati festival brings cheer, happiness, and a spirit of devotion. Many invite Lord Ganesha to their home, seek his blessings for those few days and invite him to come again next year. But he never goes away – true devotion is not celebrating him just once a year, but trying to live what he stands for, one step at a time, every day.
