There is often a temptation to do many things; life offers so many opportunities that sometimes we get distracted and carried away. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t experience what life has to offer, but we need to be clear about what our primary focus in life is. Well begun but half-hearted efforts often leave us dissatisfied, and we find ourselves going around in circles. Life is not how much we do, but how well we do it.
When we decide to take one thing and do it really well, at first, it may seem we are losing out on a lot of other things, but as we traverse this journey, we will discover life and ourselves differently.
It builds our discipline. Nothing can be achieved without the constancy of purpose and consistency of self-application. Through this, we not only discover our inner resolve, but we also learn to tame the mind when it refuses to cooperate. Discipline shapes us.
It builds our dedication. The mind loves distraction, but our dedication keeps us focused on our purpose and goal. Dedication anchors us to the higher.
It builds our determination. Life will always challenge us, testing our resolve and resilience. But it also rewards us, often when we feel we have no more inner strength to carry on. As our Principal in school would remind us, ‘Devotion to duty will determine our destiny’.
Through the one thing we decide to do well, we start shaping our inner world and external personality. It integrates us to a different level, and we bring that conscious and focused living in everything we do. And we soon discover a simple yet powerful fact of life – the essence of life is in doing one thing really well.
