The Powerful ‘If-Then’ Principle In Our Life

Computer programs are built around an if-then logic. If certain conditions are met, then the program displays certain outcomes. Once this rule is established, not only does it becomes easy to work the program and get the desired outcome, trying to beat the rule becomes extremely difficult. In life too there are if-then rules at play. Understanding and living by them helps us get closer to what we want.

If we are regular with our exercises and conscious of our habits, then we stand the best chance of having good health. But if we are careless and indulgent in spite of knowing what is not good for us, then we are headed in a direction we may not want.

If we maintain our awareness, then we stand the best chance of making less mistakes. But if we allow our minds to wander and drift, losing focus, then we risk losing valuable time and opportunities.

If we develop equanimity, then we stand the best chance of managing uncertainties and challenges in life. But if we get tossed up and down like a reed in a flowing river, then we risk losing our composure when we need it the most.

If we gain true knowledge of life, then we learn to enjoy things and relationships without getting attached. We understand that everything has a beginning and an end. But if we get clouded in our understanding, then we risk getting shattered within when we no longer have what we were attached to.

If we live in the moment, then we learn to enjoy the here and now to its fullest. But if we let our minds run wild, then we risk living with anxiety of the future and regrets of the past.

If we are compassionate, then we touch the hearts of people and find inspiration for a higher purpose. But if we are self-centred, then we develop an ego that stifles our own growth.

If we learn to let go, then we manage relationships with ease and take life in our stride. But if we hold on too tight, then we live with fear and mistrust, losing out on wonderful people entering our life and getting close to us.

As we reflect, we will start understanding better the if-then experiences we have had, and we may well discover that our success and challenges were not random but had an underlying if-then principle at play. And when we become conscious of this, we will become conscious of a simple truth – if we ‘constantly’ live with true love and joy, then we can build a beautiful life for ourselves.

  1. So true if we practice and discipline ourselves.
