We need a ladder to scale a wall. Each step of the ladder takes us closer to our goal and it is only because of the ladder that we are able to climb up. And yet, the most critical and in a way paradoxical part is that that we have to let go of the very ladder that got us to the top, to enable us scale the wall.
We all set goals and have an end in mind, and life gives us ladders to help reach our goals. The ladder is only a means to get us to the end. If we get too attached to the means, no matter how high and fast we may climb, the very purpose will get lost in our obsession.
Positions of responsibilities and power enable us to serve people. But if we get too attached to our seat of power, we risk getting egoistic and lose the golden opportunity of using our privilege for a higher purpose.
It is our duty to do well in life. The creation of wealth empowers us to make a difference in the lives of people. Becoming very wealthy comes with the risk that we can get carried away and lose sight of the good use we can put our wealth to, and the creation of wealth consumes us. Rather than a means, we start making it an end in itself.
The institutions we are part of are a tool to impact and shape society. The bigger and better the organisation, the greater the sphere of impact. But we need to be careful that as we gain appreciation from others, and start feeling good about what we have helped create, we don’t get consumed with self-importance and become so attached to our organisations and popularity, that we lose sight of the real purpose of our endeavours.
Success in life is not just climbing fast and climbing high. It lies in recognising the difference between the means we have and the inspiring purpose for which we are meant to use it. And life will become even more enjoyable when we take a step back and ensure that our ladder in life is leaning against the right wall.
