Our sense of fairness defines us as a person. It attracts people to us, helping us build strong connections and relationships. People trust us when they know we are even-minded and balanced in our approach. We can truly be fair and trustworthy when we understand where our fairness comes from, and the real power and strength of fairness.
When we reflect long enough on why we need to be fair, our surface knowledge becomes our way of being. Our conviction becomes stronger than our conditioning.
In a world where there is trust deficit, being fair all the time can come across as being naïve and not ‘street smart’. Some may even take advantage of our sense of fairness. When our conviction is strong and we have clarity on the value of fairness, we will realise that being uncompromisingly fair is the smartest thing we can do.
Faith sustains fairness. If we waver under pressure and become selective in our application of fairness, we are fooling ourselves. Our faith in the power of goodness and fairness gives us the courage we need when under pressure.
When our security is not based on how much we have, but on our own integrity, fairness becomes second nature. We find the strength of character to be fair even if it puts us at a disadvantage because we have realised that the advantage of living with inner peace far outweighs the burden of guilt.
Often when we go through challenges, in our moment of vulnerability we really wonder if life is being fair with us. We need to give ourselves the same answer we would give a student who asks us the same question on being presented with a difficult exam paper. When we remind ourselves that our ability to solve a problem is always greater than the problem, we will stop doubting and complaining, and start learning and growing.
Fairness rests on the principle of ‘what is right, not who is right’. Sometimes what seems fair to us may seem unfair to someone else. Our inner guidance always gives us the answer. It is only fair that we learn to listen to our inner voice.
