If we were to list down the things we would like to change in ourselves, chances are it would be a fairly long list. But if we were to take a step back and ask ourselves a simple question – ‘what is that one thing I know I need to change?’, what would that answer be?
In all that we know that needs change, we need to select the one change that can bring about a big difference in our life. It could be starting an exercise routine, giving up something, mending a strained relationship, changing a habit, or just simply waking up an hour earlier. When we succeed in making that one change, we unleash confidence within to move on to the next and the next and before we know it, we give ourselves the life we have always wanted.
Three questions help us overcome the inertia and mental block in making the one change that can make all the difference.
How will this change help me? When we reflect deeply and visualise in our mind’s eye what life looks like for us if we were to bring about this change, we gain the conviction that helps overcome the moods of the mind that keeps us away from doing the right thing.
What do I need to do to bring about this change? Good intent without a clear plan is wishful thinking. At best we may start with enthusiasm but soon we will fall into old ways of doing things. But if we think about what the effort may look like, and are honest that it may be difficult at first, we will find ourselves better prepared. Clarity on the way ahead will sustain our efforts..
What is holding me back from making the change I know I need and want? We need complete honesty in answering this for ourselves. Somewhere we are gaining some pleasure and comfort in not making the change. Being honest will give us the courage to overcome short-term benefits for creating long-term value in our life.
Big doors swing on small hinges. A small change is all that we may need to make a big difference in our life. There is no better time to take the first step, than today.
Thanks. Such a useful and timely reminder
