A lighthouse plays a very important role, standing firm in choppy waters and rough weather. It not only serves as a navigation aid to sailors but also warns them of dangers. We too need to play the role of a lighthouse in the life of others.
We have much to offer. We don’t realise it, but in spite of all our challenges and constraints, we can make a difference in someone’s life. It could be giving them a perspective when they find themselves in a difficult situation, or emotional comfort and support, or giving of our time and resources to help them.
When we share our stories and experiences, not only do we give ideas to others and help change their thinking, we warn them of potential dangers which we ourselves may have gone through. Finding the courage to share our failures and challenges can help save someone from a potential crisis.
And it is not just the light of knowledge and perspective that we can give. The warmth of our love and friendship can mean much to someone in their hour of need. Knowing that we are always there for them can in itself reassure them in a manner which helps them cope with situations in their life.
A lighthouse is only effective because it stands on firm rock. We too need to stand firm, unshakable in our faith and knowledge. When we realise that being there for others gives our own life joy and purpose, we move away from being self-centred and centre ourselves within. And when we allow the light from within reach others, we light up our own life.
