Our Inner Reset

Oct 4, 2020 | faith, optimism, patience | 3 comments

Sometimes disruptions in life slow things down and we learn to take a pause. But after a while we realise life is not just asking us to pause for a bit. It is asking us to reset ourselves. Tiding through a pause and picking up from where we left is relatively easy. A reset truly tests us.

And three things will help us come through this test. Faith, Optimism, Flexibility.

Faith in the immense inner power we have, which though not fully tapped into, is always available if we learn how to. Faith that there is always a way forward, we just need to keep ourselves open and alert. Faith that our inner voice will guide us through the toughest of challenges. Faith is not about having the answers. It is about believing that the answers will come.

Optimism that life will give us opportunities to regain, rebuild and recover. That no matter how tough a reset may be, it is pregnant with opportunities and possibilities. My family came from Karachi during partition, leaving almost everything behind and restarting life in an unknown place, with very little. I grew up hearing stories of hardship and challenges. But not once have I heard that there was despair. The optimistic determination of that generation helped recover and rebuild.

When things change, we must learn to change as well. Being inflexible and rigid in our ways and thinking will break us. Flexibility comes from the right understanding of the situation, acceptance of a new order and willingness to learn a different way of doing things or even different things.

But a reset not handled well can be a disaster from which we may find it difficult to recover. We can only navigate through a reset if we quickly reset ourselves within. Rushing into things or being fearful of the future, can both have a damaging effect. Reset is the time to be reflective and vigilant, disciplined and focused, patient and persevering.

Our ability is greater than we know. We must recognise that our ability to solve a problem is always bigger than the problem. And when we have discovered that truth about ourselves, we have truly reset ourselves to face anything in life.

  2. Very well written Vivek. I would also include RESILIENCE apart from faith, optimism and flexibility. The ability to bounce back from a challenging situation however tough is a measure of our ability to believe in oneself and the Almighty. Resilience would also include doing our inner reset to balance our emotions and finding a purpose and meaning in our hardships, so that we can remain hopeful and optimistic and not losing touch with our inner core, which can otherwise get rattled, dismayed and shaken by the traumas of our live.
