Over the past couple of days I have received several messages for the Ganesh ( Indian God with an elephant head ) festival. It reminded me of something very nice I had heard with respect to the symbolism.
The large forehead reminds us that we too must be broad minded. The two big ears signify the power of listening deeply. The large stomach digests a lot. We too must develop the ability to digest the varied situations we go through in life. The small feet move slow and steady, yet with elegance, just the way we should in life. The large trunk denotes protecting our dignity and honour. I am sure there are several other interesting interpretations as well.
We often get into philosophical and intellectual debates on idols. Our ability to see the Ideal in the Idol will serve us well. Our lives get enriched by learning and living what the symbols and idols stand for. And herein lies the reason for symbolism. When we need to communicate strong positive ideals to society, we need a powerful medium which cuts across age and language.
A piece of cloth with a design invokes patriotism, national pride and a sense of duty. The instinctive feeling to stand at attention on hearing a tune. Or a piece of metal given to us on winning. Itโs the ideal that inspires us. The patriotism in the flag, the love in the National Anthem, the excellence and hard work in the medal.
When we offer our devotion and worship, whether to a God, Country or our Work, we must know it is the ideal that motivates and drives us.
And as we gain a deeper understanding, we will realise that there is a common ideal which all idols and symbols convey to us. Love and Service to our fellow human beings.
What a beautiful explanation about ideals and Idols.!
Loved it … and love you always ๐
Very good explanation Vivek.
Good morning Vivek
To worship form or formless has been discussed for ages but your example of national flag and anthem explains in a way any lay man connect with .
Thanks a lot . Earlier I used to wait for Times of India to arrive now itโs your post๐๐๐๐
That’s very generous of you to say Sudhir…
Many times strong ideals donโt require idols to remind us of something we believe in.
Beautiful examples of the flag/ anthem . Agree with Sudhir …. I am sure there are many who feel the same but may not express it. Like Dr Anand would say โ Lage Raho โ ๐ we are waiting to read every morning๐ Stay blessed.
An amazing read and so well explained the true meaning of Idols and Ideals
I shall wait for a book of blogs written by Vivek. May I place the order in advance?
