Sometimes Less Is More

Over a period of time, we get conditioned to having more. Greater power, more success, being richer, lots of experiences, and plenty of friends. By all means, we must do well for ourselves, expand our networks and build enriching relationships. But not everything in life needs to be more. We need to step back and discover for ourselves that sometimes less is more.

When we learn to speak a little less and pay attention to what is being said, we understand a lot more of what is trying to be communicated. Our insight into people and situations is greater when we learn to listen deeply.

When we worry less, we are more available in the present to attend to what needs to be done in the best possible manner.

When we have less expectations in a relationship, we create space for more love to flourish. Many times it is not the absence of love but the presence of expectations that blocks the flow of love.

When we criticise less, we learn to appreciate more. It is easy to find fault, but in the process, we lose out on the larger aspect of someone’s abilities and character.

The less we think about ourselves, the more we give to a relationship. It’s not just about spending time, but also being aware of which part of the relationship we spend more time on.

The less regrets we have, the more opportunities we create. Living in the past can rob us of the vital present. Our creativity and innovation can only express themselves when we are fully available in the here and now.

When we compare less, we become more secure. Our security does not come from our position in the world but from our own integrity and centredness.

The less cynical we are, the more we learn to trust. There will always be a few people who will take advantage of our goodness, but our faith in goodness builds our trustworthiness and our ability to trust people.

Sometimes less is not about living a lesser life. It is understanding the real value of what should be more and what should be less, to make us joyful and to be able to give more of ourselves.
