Every stone has a statue in it. When the sculptor works on it, the statue reveals itself. In life, we too face situations, in a manner of speaking stones, which are pregnant with opportunities and productive potential. Our ability to carve out the beauty from each situation lies in three things; our belief, vision, and dedicated self-application.
We must believe that no matter how difficult, challenging, or complex the situation, there is a potential in it waiting for us to discover. But if we doubt ourselves or the ability for things to change, we stand no chance of exploiting the opportunity we have. Doubt can block the best talent and ability from expressing itself. When we believe, we can create.
But belief itself is not enough. We need to dare to dream and create in our mind’s eye the beautiful future that can be created from the current situation. Our own imagination and vision are our ability to visualise what others may fail to see. When we have a vision, we can create.
I am reminded of a Japanese proverb that says – ‘Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare.’ It is our dedicated effort that gives shape to our lives. When our vision, steeped in belief is met with tireless self-application, we can create.
The beauty of the statue comes, not from how hard or soft the stone is, but from the way the sculptor constantly uses the chisel and hammer. Situations that are tough and easy don’t shape us. The way we approach each one, with our belief, vision, and effort is what shapes us.
But we can only carve out a beautiful life for ourselves when we learn to chisel ourselves within. We too have inner beauty, waiting to be sculpted. No one will do that for us. We are the sculptors of our own lives.
