Learning To See the Dance, Not The Dancer

Often we are so focussed on the form that we sometimes miss out on the substance and the beauty of a situation. A story I read years ago caught my attention.

A man was playing the violin at a subway station in Washington DC. He played for 45 minutes and collected $52. Over a thousand people passed by, only seven stopped to listen for a few minutes. His name was Joshua Bell, one of the best concert violinists in the world, and the violin he played on cost 3.5 million dollars. It was an experiment conducted by the Washington Post.

The setting in which we perceive something becomes so important that many times it becomes a hindrance for us to appreciate the true essence of things.

We may hear something of value but ignore it; but when someone important and respected says the same thing, we take notice. We may pass by a painting without giving it a second look; but when the artist becomes famous we appreciate the work. We may meet someone and not pay too much attention; but when we learn the person is important or famous, our demeanour and attitude may change.

When we brush off our conditioning and sub-conscious filters, we start experiencing life differently. We start recognising and appreciating the beauty of things and people for what they are, not who they are.

We open up a whole new world for ourselves. The best of meals could be an inexpensive one. The best advice could come from people we otherwise take for granted. Role models could be people we interact with in our daily lives.

When we stop emphasizing form and taking substance for granted, we give everything its due credit and develop the eye of perception, free from conditioning, judgements, and preconceived notions.

We know we have done that when we learn to see the dance, not the dancer.

  1. Profound and important insights Vivek. So easy to overlook the wisdom around because I take things and people for granted. A great reminder.
