Even though we are motivated and empowered, we often feel small and helpless when we look around at the magnitude of change needed around us. We sometimes stop trying to make a difference, asking ourselves the question – ‘what difference will it make?’. Whenever this feeling creeps in, I am reminded of a beautiful story that taught me the power of one.
There were thousands of starfish on the beach that would die if not put back in the sea. A child was picking up one at a time and throwing them back. A wise old man walked up to her and said there were many thousands on the beach and asked her, ‘what difference do you think you will make?’. She picked up the next starfish, threw it into the sea and said – ‘I made a difference to that one’.
When we make a difference in the life of even one person, we change their world. The care given to one person can inspire them to make a difference in the life of others. One flame can start lighting a thousand torches.
One act of goodness is like throwing a stone in a lake; it can have a ripple effect. Others sitting on the fence find the courage and inspiration to take their one step, and before we know it we may well have created a nexus of good.
One inspiring idea can capture our imagination, propelling us into a joyous, energetic and dynamic frame of mind.
One good deed a day can rekindle the love and care within, giving us the strength and inspiration even as we face our daily challenges.
One good friend in life can be that companion whose love gives us the guidance, strength and courage to make life enjoyable and meaningful.
No challenge is too big to surmount; no change is too small to be undertaken. When we understand the power of one, we are always willing to take one step, and even if we are the only one, we will realise we are never alone.
And we will truly recognise the power of one when we open our hearts and look for the next starfish in our life.
