Circle Of Life

At a dinner with friends we were recounting our travel stories. I was reminded of an experience I once had which made me realise the circle of life.

I was at Frankfurt airport at a café just above the railway station, waiting for a train to Koln. A passenger asked me where I had got the trolley from on which my 2 bags were put. I directed him and a few moments later he came back still carrying his bags in his hand. On enquiring, he informed me the trolley machine needed a 2 Euro coin which he didn’t have. I gave him the 2 Euro coin, which he reluctantly accepted, thanked me, and got himself a trolley.

In Koln I bought a game for my boys which was packed in a large box. At Koln station I used a trolley to take the 3 pieces of luggage to the platform and somehow got them onto the train. As we were arriving at Frankfurt airport, I was wondering how I would get to the check-in counter with all the luggage.

I requested the passenger in front of me to help carry one bag off the train. Standing on the platform trying to figure out a way, I suddenly saw an empty trolley in front of me. When all the passengers had moved away, I realised nobody was claiming it. I used it to take all my luggage to the check-in counter, and when I put the trolley back in its place, out came a 2 Euro coin from the machine!

We may not realise it or have a way to prove it, but the circle of life exists. Every word, thought and action that originates from us, carries a consequence that comes back to us. The time frame and the magnitude is never in our control, our actions are.

When we realise that our present is the effect of our past, we empower ourselves knowing that our future is being carved out in the present. What we have done we cannot undo, but life allows us the chance to do the right things in the right way here and now to build a better future for ourselves.

We can only give our best, operating from a space of goodness all the time when we have faith, not just in ourselves but in the circle of life. Life sends us messages in strange ways to help us strenghten our faith, sometimes it could just be a 2 Euro coin.

  2. Reminds me of The Prayer of St Francis, copied below, that has inspired me through out my life : ) “For it is in giving that we receive”

Lord make Me an instrument of Your peace
Where there is hatred let me sow love.
    Where there is injury, pardon.
    Where there is doubt, faith.
    Where there is despair, hope.
    Where there is darkness, light.
    Where there is sadness joy.
O Divine master grant that I may
Not so much seek to be consoled as to console
To be understood, as to understand.
To be loved. as to love
For it’s in giving that we receive
And it’s in pardoning that we are pardoned
And it’s in dying that we are born…
    To eternal life.
