Removing Inequalities

Dec 14, 2020 | awareness, balance | 1 comment

We live with several inequalities around us. Disparities can create divisions. Often these divisions can cause invisible barriers for us, preventing us to recognise the fact that the oneness in us is the same oneness in others. To reduce inequalities in the world, we need to first see people as equal in our minds.

Being born privileged does not make us more equal than others. It puts a responsibility to reach out and share our good fortune to help others in their journey. Generosity and compassion remove inequalities.

Many around us may not be as quick and sharp as us in many things. Our skills and talents must never give us the feeling of being superior to someone else. In fact, not only do we need to patiently support them, we need to have the humility of learning from the things they are better at. Humility and patience remove inequalities.

We identify ourselves with a name, family, community, and country. In a complex world, we often forget that these structures exist for practical considerations. If we don’t go beyond these identities, enablers become barriers. Connecting with people as people, not as labels, removes inequalities.

The fundamental principle of equality is respect. We may interact with people from different backgrounds and positions, which may need us to adapt our interactions but not our attitude. A Managing Director, factory worker, constable, commissioner, or a head of state, are all equally deserving of our respect. Respect for the person, not the title, removes inequality.

When white light passes through a prism, it splits up into seven colours, each with a different wavelength. On the face of it they are clearly different and not equal to each other, either qualitatively or quantitatively. Yet, the student who has studied knows that their source is the same. Knowledge of ourselves, the world and our relationship with the world, removes inequalities.

In mathematics, both sides of the equation are balanced. When we find ourselves viewing others either from the prism of superiority or sometimes feel inadequate meeting someone with great achievements, we need to balance ourselves internally and remove the prism of differences. It is only then we will realise the universal truth – in essence, we are all equal.
