Learning To Unlearn

Oct 6, 2020 | growing, knowledge | 1 comment

Sometimes to learn we have to unlearn. Just as stale water needs to be removed before fresh water can fill the glass.

Unlearning starts with actively and consciously evaluating the way we think, act and behave. And in our honest self evaluation, dropping what’s coming in our way and being open to learning and adopting new and better ways of thinking and doing things.

As simple as it sounds, unlearning isn’t so simple. Our fear and ego holds us back.

Fear of transitioning from an ingrained way of being to a different personality. It also shakes us when we suddenly realise we need to be different in many ways. Comfort zones can sometimes be blind zones holding us back.

And our ego will battle the unlearning process because it negates the way we have been and challenges our fundamental outlook. To be honest with ourselves and others, opens our mind to not only embracing the new but also letting go of the old.

Embracing change sounds easy but it’s our honest admission that some of our current ways may no longer be relevant or correct, that needs much awareness, courage and above all humility.

The younger generation is growing up in a very interesting way. They have much to gain from our experiences and stories, we have much to learn from their way of thinking and doing things.

When we speak less and listen more, react less and reflect more, we will learn to unlearn. And realise the principle that will truly transform us – What’s right, let’s keep it right. What’s wrong, let’s set it right.

  1. I particularly like this blog. I believe it is also about taking the time to evaluate what we may have to rethink. Then getting out of the comfort zone is never easy. But it is very rewarding. Life is a necklace of new experiences. This makes life so wondèrful. It needs reflection, persevèrance and above all courage.
