Hitting A Wall

Sep 21, 2020 | awareness, resilience | 1 comment

We seem to be moving along well having got into our stride when suddenly we hit a wall. The mental wall of finding it difficult to move ahead and every step becomes a struggle. Marathoners sometimes face this almost two thirds into the race. Authors get a writer’s block. Leadership suddenly feels loss of clarity and direction.

This wall is a strong internal resistance that we experience. Not that we lack the experience, knowledge, talent or skill. We just find it very tough to bring them to play when we need them.

The mind loves playing its tricks on us. By nature it is lazy unless brought well under the influence of our intellect. It almost convinces us that we’ve reached the end of the road and can go no further. The wall is the mind playing games with us.

We too need to play a better game and win against the mind.

We must remember to never stop when we hit the wall. We may rest a bit, but never stop. Stopping makes the wall stronger and sometimes permanent.

Inspiring ourselves wins over the mind. Ignoring the wall and creatively visualising the goal we are working towards, gives us the inner boost to break through the resistance.

Helping others along the way is very powerful. The inner feeling of struggles disappears when we evoke love and empathy for others. Helping carry someone else’s burden reduces our own.

Taking out time to do something different refreshes us and the mind co-operates better when refreshed.

And the mind, like a child, sometimes needs to be promised an incentive if it completes what is needed. Promising ourselves a reward when we complete our task, suddenly energises the mind.

Walls confine us. But we are limitless by nature. And when we beak through these mental walls, we will have the breakthroughs we need to move ahead in life.
