Willingness and Ability

Our ability to solve a problem is always bigger than the problem. Our true potential is yet unknown to us. The future will be uncertain and challenging and there are two things that will see us through – our Willingness and Ability.

Our Will to keep moving, one step at a time, sees us through. No matter how high the mountain, the climber having gauged the height and planned his climb, neither focuses on how daunting is the task, nor does he look down. He has just one focus, the next step ahead of him.

Our willingness to take on life comes from our sense of responsibility towards ourselves and those who depend on us. It comes from our determination to overcome tough situations. It comes from our love for life and a resolve that we will make a great life for ourselves. Life may test us and slow down our pace, but our will power must not be defeated.

Courage when we are struggling tempered with compassion when we see others struggling much harder, gives us the perspective and the Will to keep moving ahead.

And our Ability exists. We need to learn to tap into the extraordinary power that resides in each one of us, especially when all seems lost. I am reminded of the test match when India was given a follow on by a strong Australian team, and all seemed lost, only for one of India’s best batsmen to display his willingness and ability to fight hard, to not just save, but win the match. He found the Ability of calm endurance with determination and focus.

But the secret lies in bringing forth both, our Willingness “and” Ability. One without the other is like a motorcycle with a punctured tyre. No matter how good we are, if our spirit is broken and we have lost our will, we won’t succeed. And just our willingness without the patient self-application and deep faith will see us quickly burn out.

Life tests us everyday. And therefore we need to nourish our will power and develop the art of tapping into our infinite potential everyday. And when we scale the mountain, we will of course enjoy the view. But we will look back and relish the climb and memories of all that we went through and overcame because of two things.

We never let our Willingness die and we kindled the fire of our Ability.

  1. Beautiful… Completely resonate. First we hold faith….then Faith holds us.
