Dealing with our Past is not always easy. The multitude of experiences carry emotions attached to them and even though the events have passed, these emotions stay with us. Sometimes as our emotional baggage.
We can live with regret for all the mistakes we’ve made. And beat ourselves up internally for not having been wiser in making better choices and decisions. It does not help. Regret of the past drains us and depletes us physically and emotionally. We must drop regrets of the past.
The happy moments of our past serve as solace in difficult times. Happy memories easily become attachments when we regularly revisit them. This unreal comfort of past memories does nothing to better our present and future. We must drop attachment to the past.
But if we drop our regrets and attachments of the past, do we just drop our past ? We must drop living in the past, not learning from the past.
Each experience, favourable and unfavourable is today a teaching for us. We are lucky to have such a wealth of learnings and insights which holds us in good stead today. Viewed thus, even the difficult past is nothing but a disguised blessing.
But it’s not easy to let go of our past. Every time the past comes to overcome our thoughts, it is our knowledge and awareness that will help us bring the mind back to the present and allow us to smile at our past as the dream gone by. And we can only smile when we awaken to the fact that our future can be very different and better than our past.
We are shaped by our past. But we don’t need to get stuck in that shape . Life allows us to reshape ourselves everyday. Let the hope and enthusiasm of a better future dispel the shadows of our Past.
So true, but easily saud ,very difficult to implement. They say past is your shadow, so you just cant leave ir forget. Although that would be the best in your interest to live happy life and focus in future.
Past went fast
Future will be super
Give yourself a present ,now!!!
Nicely said Amrish !
Past is history
Future is a mystery
Today is a Gift so its
Called Present!
Live well today so it
Becomes a beautiful
And memorable Past!
On my 70th birthday today, I was thinking about my father, who died 36 years ago. In one of my poems about my relationship with him, I wrote the following:
Memory is a wonderful thing,
How do you sum up a life?
Despite saying one should not live with regret
I will say it now
I regret not saying this enough
I love you
That’s beautiful and touching Lorne ! Thank you…..
