The best musician needs a well-tuned Instrument. When we drop our ego, we too can become instruments where life flows through us. Understanding, accepting and living this principle can be very liberating. This question often confuses us and we wonder whether we are instruments of the Higher, and if we are, how does one tune oneself within.

Knowledge tunes us. Like a bow, we see arrows being shot from us. But if we deeply reflect, the arrow, though seemingly shot “from” the bow, is being shot “through” the bow by the archer. The bow becomes the instrument in the hands of the archer. Once we gain knowledge of ourselves and differentiate between our limited egos and limitless Self, we learn to become instruments.

Humility tunes us. We shine bright in life with our actions. We start feeling the sense of “I did it”. This is our ego. Just as a bulb feels it is responsible for the light it emits. But without electricity, the bulb is impotent. The bulb is an instrument through which electricity flows to give us light.

Faith tunes us. We may not know that Higher today, but knowing It exists and working to dis-cover It becomes our ultimate goal of life. 

Awareness tunes us. When we start witnessing and realising the cause-effect relationship in life, we start understanding there are no coincidences. And accepting with awareness the play of the Higher in life tunes us.

Discipline tunes us. A broken flute and a weakly strung bow are of little use. Strengthening ourselves physically, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually makes us fit for use. We often forget that our inner growth is deeply dependant on a healthy body. Daily exercise is as important as daily study and meditation.

The instrument needs the musician. The musician needs the instrument. 

The bow needs the archer. The archer needs the bow. 

The bulb needs electricity. Electricity needs a bulb to flow through.

When love and joy flow through all our actions, the Higher in us is expressing. When we drop our ego, we become the Instrument.
