Music soothes us. Even an agitated mind feels a sense of calmness. It focuses our attention as we resonate with what we are hearing. And a focused mind is a calm mind.
A favourite song or tune triggers memories. Memories of earlier days, of events, people at different times in our life, different phases of our lives, some happy, some challenging. Sometimes we even start feeling the same emotion as we did then. And often the music lingers in us through the day.
Sometimes words from a song make us reflective and we get an insight into life in our deeply meditative mood engrossed with our music. The emotion of the artiste resonates with us.
Such is the power of Music. And yet when we think about it, it’s a combination of sound and words arranged in a pattern which we receive as sound waves. And these waves have power to deeply impact us.
We too are a source of powerful waves. The words from the depths of silence and the harmony of our joyous enthusiasm in everything we do, creates Music. Just as music is a creation of love, similarly, acting with love is Music in action.
And when we tune in to the inner music, we suddenly discover a source of strength and happiness, which gives us a spring in our step, a smile on our face and a shine in our eyes. It starts defining who we are. And when we’re tuned out we immediately start striking discordant notes.
Life will keep testing us. No matter what, the Music must never stop.
I have always felt that music is a beautiful expression of words . What one cant express in words , music does it all.
Well said. Music is indeed the essence of life
So rightly said “Music is the food of Love”!
A lot depends on how one defines music. To me it’s more than a tune… The sounds of nature, for instance, are music to my ears.
Music can be an instant antidote to stress and a beautiful bridge between people.
I love listening to music with my teenager in the car. He may not sat much if I ask about his day but with music I know we get a chance to be in “sync” right away.
So true….Music bonds…
Vivek, I disagree.
Music does not necessarily soothe. Far from it. In more instances it does the opposite.
To amplify, the entire multi billion dollar music industry comprising of the genres R&B, Soul, Funk, the much derided Disco, Jazz and large portions of Rap do not soothe. They are more often than not a call to action, which often mean dance and sometimes, ahem, fornication. Rock, heavy metal and its derivatives similarly are not soothing. I could go on.
Why look at western popular music, in Western Classical music too there are stirring passages.
In our own India, Tansen was know to have lamps self combusting when he sang Raag Deepak, and to cause the heavens to open and rain come cascading down when he sang Raag Malhar. I agree those stories are just that, stories.
The point being, music has many many facets evoking a plethora of emotion. Being soothed is but one small part.
I agree, music must never stop.
Sunil point well taken. There are always shades and sometimes the same music has different effects on people. What one may find soothing another may find otherwise.
But that aside, the reflection is more in the spirit that we generally listen to music we enjoy and that resonates. The term soothing is used here in a liberal sense to mean that which appeals to the mind.
Just as outer music has an impact, our actions stemming from the melodious Joy within is also a type of music we create and offer the world. And as we both agree, the music must never stop 😊
Yes, Vivek, in a reflective and meditative mood, the song ‘Ghunghat Ke Pat Khol Re, Tohe Piya Mile Ge’ comes to mind. It reminds us that if we are really keen to meet our BELOVED DIVINE, we should shed our ego.
